Formed in 2010, Shatner's Bassoon follow their debut Aquatic Ape Privilege with The Self Titled Album: Shansa Barsnaan. On titles alone they would be hard to top but their riotously affectionate and satirical musical concept has references that stretch from Tim Berne and Mike Patton to abstract improv through to the spikily experimental bands that came out of the free jazz/Captain Beefheart influenced side of 1980’s New Wave from Gang of Four to Stump. Shatner's Bassoon is the Leeds-based spiritual offspring of the sadly missed maniacal improv TrioVD. Their legacy is in good hands here, with collective improvisation ignoring conventional instrumental roles for the most part and explosively staccato sections contrasting with a more sinuously abstract narrative. The addition of Joost Hendricx to the line up broadens the sound to include samples and electronics. It's the weird and wonderful second chapter from Leeds’ uncompromising new generation of jazz noise-making terrorists.
