Raja is one of the great communicators, able to row in all sorts of stellar guests to his jazz funk collective. Previous contributors include Andy Sheppard, Arun Gosh and Denys Baptise and an equally stellar crew drop in for this Pizza Express party. Soweto Kinch lends a rap and alto solo to the Eastern flavoured funk of ‘Karnic Flow’, Atzmon struts it Blockheads style on ‘Fnuk’ and Phelps dances through the Township lilt of ‘Freedom’. It's all rattling good fun, and as eclectic as hell, with Raja the thumping glue beneath it, all Jaco one moment, Chic the next. And what it lacks in subtlety and soul it makes up for in white heat energy. Like any live recordings, there are longueurs (‘Junk Culture’ is your cue to queue for the loo), but you'd be hard-hearted bugger not to jig around your bedsit to this.
