Chris Sharkey is one of the UK's most agile musical shapeshifters. Hewing heavy riffs for the likes of the much-missed Bilbao Syndrome – and providing the spark to reignite a punk-edged Acoustic Ladyland (sadly also defunct)- or fuelling the sheer feral mind-melt that was trioVD. He's latterly switched to bass to push out pile-driving b-lines for the second coming of Roller Trio, more than living up to his surname's ability to swim in any direction with easeful menace.
Yet, it's with northern trio Shiver – also featuring bassist Andy Champion and drummer Joost Hendrickx (great name!) – that Sharkey's maverick skillset really shines as his masterful use of textural sounds from his guitar, electronics and vocals are artfully smeared around the stereo image via his finely-tuned post production. This fourth, and longest, studio instalment of shivery delights features three long improvisations spliced, Teo Macero-style, into an undulating 40-minute triptych which builds from ethereal washes and rhythms into a broken beat-driven section, rising to a chanting hypnotic high, before settling on a drunken, staggering groove. It's the sonic equivalent of diving into an ice-cold swimming pool on a scorching hot day: disorientating and refreshing in equal measure.
