Endresen is one of Europe's most extraordinary vocalists: a voice-asinstrument exponent who has taken singing away from song and even language. And Westerhus is one of Europe's most extraordinary guitarists. Combining jazz, rock and avant-metal, he's somewhere between Fred Frith and Sonny Sharrock; but at other times, as he's currently demonstrating as one third of Nils Petter Molvær's live band, he is as tender and textural as Fennesz. As individuals, then, they have quite a pedigree. And as a duo, they don't disappoint. This live set, from the brilliant Nattjazz festival in Bergen, Norway, sounds like a giant finger dragged across a Kaoss Pad, or even like 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL 9000 shutting down for the last time. In fact, it's only Westerhus that makes use of electronics: Endresen creates her gobbledygook, guttural phonetics by entirely organic means. But what is remarkable is how well the two approaches blend – and that both musicians manage to convey so much emotion as well as technique.
