Recorded live in the Kind of Blue café in Copenhagen on an upright piano last year, Toldam (born in 1979) is from a generation of Danish musicians who no longer feel they have to pay allegiance to hard bop, which for decades has been his country's jazz lingua franca. Patient, intense, and with a lovely touch, he quietly wheels the trio into view on ‘Gammel Blå Trae’ with Finsrud's things-that-go-bump-in-the-night accompaniment initially sounding as if a waiter had inadvertently plonked a couple of glasses on the top of the piano. As the piece unfolds over 17:49 mins, you are suddenly aware that this album represents the emergence of an important young talent. Remarkably, Toldam has led a piano trio since the age of nine; now into his early-thirties this is a mature statement of a musician who deserves to be heard on the European stage. Pieces such as ‘Im Dieser Nacht’ and ‘Syng Lyng Syng’ simply make you wonder why we've not heard of him before – but we will now.
