In contrast to the large textural palette of Sinne Eeg's 2011 recording, Remembering You, of which I was a huge fan, this new release on Stunt Records sees the Danish vocalist stripping everything back to the sole accompaniment of bassist Thomas Fonnesbæck. A nine-track collection of mostly standards, Eeg's unfailing pitch, impressive range, mellifluous timbre and absolutely rock solid relationship to the pulse continues to impress. The duo's treatment of ‘You Don't Know What Love Is’ is especially beautiful, with Fonnesbæck's overdubbed electric and bowed acoustic bass setting the scene for the raw emotional power of Eeg's vocal. Against the backdrop of Fonnesbæck's fulsome double stops and harmonics on electric bass, Eeg brings an incredible intensity to the Heyman/Green standard ‘Body And Soul’. Signing off with Enrico Pieranunzi's ‘Fellini's Waltz’, with lyrics by Lorraine Feather, Eeg negotiates the circuitous melodic line with an easy fluency, entirely in tune with the song's delicate lyricism.
