Sir Roland Hanna was part of Detroit piano dynasty that included Tommy Flanagan, Hank Jones, Barry Harris, Kirk Lightsey and Geri Allen among many others. As much a leading musical educator as he was an outstanding pianist, Roland Hanna proved to be equally as comfortable working with Benny Goodman, Charles Mingus, The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra or the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra as he was in the company of numerous world class classical orchestras. Here Hanna is vigorously accompanied by his life-long musical partner George Mraz on bass plus drummer Ben Riley, then all members of the popular New York Jazz Quartet. On this programme of half-a-dozen Rodgers and Hart standards plus three Hanna compositions, this exciting trio prove to be a most cohesive unit. And while it's plainly obvious that his classical education empowered him with a truly expansive technique, in no way is Hanna's highly confident approach compromised, this is jazz piano of the finest order. Check out ‘My Romance’ or one of Hanna's originals ‘It's A Small World’.
