This is modern soul with an epic, urgent sound, built on the axis of Dionne Bennett and Dave Stapleton's arrangements. Bennett's deep, roundly expressive voice, and a persona not inclined to step back while implacably exploring love's vicissitudes, is the potent first line of attack. On ‘Delusive’, she bites out accusatory words at a self-deceptive lover, leaving room for Stapleton's Moog riffing and the echoing shiver of Elliot Bennett's cymbals. Bennett's vocal arrangements build choral reinforcements from her own multiplied voice, swooning and diving beneath the insectoid swirls of paranoia on ‘Oblivion’. With Slowly Rolling Camera's quartet bolstered by string sections and star guests such as Laura Jurd and Stuart McCallum, Bennett's lyrics are forcefully dramatised. Moments of Fender Rhodes-led fusion during ‘Scintillation’ underline the strands of jazz sensibility, which interweave Bennett and Stapleton's contributions while maintaining momentum, till a piano love requiem, ‘Unsetting Sun’, pauses for breath, and Bennett's most smokily affecting vocal. This could be a gospel album by Massive Attack, standing out for its clearly-focused ambition and sound.
