This multi-racial Californian group’s choice of moniker pretty much nails their gang colours to the mast. Here’s a clue: they’re not talking about forest fires. Recorded in 1971 (just a year after the release of their self-titled debut), Everything is a veritable smoker’s delight of laid-back weirdness. ‘Shelda’ kicks things off with a mellow rim-shot groove that prefigures trip-hop by about 25 years. The title-track is tight, head-nodding prog-funk with splashes of vibraphone and Fender Rhodes. Tracks like ‘Miss Shirley’ and ‘Curtis’ offer up a murky smog of post-Bitches Brew downer fusion with creeping tendrils of oleaginous bass clarinet, heavily flanged electric bass and – on the latter – a break-out of hard-swinging deep jazz with rippling piano and jerky, Dolphyesque alto sax. Throw in some trippy soundscapes of clanking chains, operatic vocals and disembodied cackles and the odd percussion interlude and this is definitely one worth staying in for.
