Softs by name, but this band bears little resemblance to its classic original line up. Indeed, only Ratledge remains and, as evidenced by the DVD, he's a reluctant soloist, with his growling organ presence much reduced. But what treasures we have instead. Jenkins' writing is confident and dynamically varied, while his multi-instrumental colourings, the oboe and the keys that counterpoint Ratledge, give the band a freshness it long had lacked. But the real gold dust here is Holdsworth, whose presence completely realigns the band: from the killer riff of the monster opener ‘Hazard Profile’ to the dazzling runs of ‘Bundles’, with Marshall chasing Holdsworth every which way, Holdsworth doesn't so much steal the show as pack it all up in his bag and run away with it. It's hard to tell whether Ratledge was relieved or aghast, but whether you're a Softs, Nucleus or Holdsworth kind of guy (or gal), then this treasure is a must-have. True the sound is not all it should be, but it's still a pretty good restoration.
