Swiss ensemble Sonar follow up their 2019 collaboration with guitarist David Torn by culling more music from the lengthy sessions that produced their first joint effort, Tranceportation Vol.1, last year. It's more of the same – compelling slow-grind funk rhythms played on tritone guitars and basses over which Torn – known for his work with the likes of David Sylvian, Don Cherry, Jan Gabarek and Laurie Anderson – adds evocative loops and washes.
Although a little variation, particularly in tempo, would be welcome, the ideas they explore are good ones and the musical contours are precisely etched, every note serving a purpose. Although sonically dense, the instruments always have room to breathe, and there is plenty of dialogue between the players to keep things interesting, as well as a rhythmic insistence powering even the slower numbers along; the overall effect is reminiscent of Jon Hassell, Robert Fripp or even at times, the more outré moments of one of Sylvian's 1980s solo records such as Gone To Earth or Alchemy.
