As well as several posthumous archive issues, Clark was responsible for six albums released during his short lifetime, five of them on Blue Note. This compilation has four of those including his leader debut, Dial “S” For Sonny, and the famous Cool Struttin', while missing here, perhaps thanks to its use on a previous AvidJazz release, is Sonny's Crib (done in September 1957 with Coltrane, a fortnight before Blue Train). Clark's playing is obviously out of the Powell school, perhaps less intense and more joyous, but he is well served by the rhythm-sections, particularly the combination of Chambers and Jones on two dates, including the 1957 trio set. Another of the joys here is two albums' worth of early Art Farmer, while good early Mobley and early Fuller on Dial “S” are matched by early McLean on Struttin'. The material is not much to write home about, except for six standards (including the one Ike Quebec appearance on ‘Deep In A Dream’), but the spirit of the playing easily transcends the personal problems experienced by some of the participants.
