There is a decentish album to be made from the combination of highlights of these two sets, each of which is maddeningly inconsistent. Best known for his work with Miles Davis during his electric period, Fortune is an excellent alto saxophonist-flautist who solos powerfully but is frankly compromised by material that varies wildly in quality. Operating in very similar territory to soulful fusinoeers The Crusaders and Tom Scott, he does very well with driving latin-tinged cuts that have substantial dancefloor appeal and sampleadelic potential in no small measure but he sadly plays too many ballads that skate dangerously close to the murky fringes of MOR, which is not good for the ear, the soul or the soulful ear. A Fortune compilation that discerningly cherry picks from his lengthy career would be a welcome release and might well include one or two of the standout tracks on these records. But reissuing both original albums in their entirety is a difficult move to justify. Unless you happen to own the master tapes.
