It’s certainly neat for collectors to have both Sonny Rollins’ At Music Inn and the MJQ’s At Music Inn Vol.2 on a single disc. The live tracks on each were recorded at the same concert but, with the quartet signed to Atlantic and Rollins briefly to Metrojazz, the original LPs appeared on their respective labels, with Sonny only playing on part of each album, accounting for just over half of this somewhat schizophrenic CD. The bulk of the MJQ-only music consists of two John Lewis pieces plus versions of ‘Yardbird Suite’ and a ballad medley featuring some lovely Jackson. More surprisingly the Rollins LP, involving the quartet’s rhythm-section but not Jackson, was completed (as is the CD) by two tracks of the Teddy Edwards quartet – which, by a bizarre coincidence, is commemorated in this month’s Joe Castro box (though its version of ‘Billie’s Bounce’ is a different take). Thus, Sonny’s 41 minutes, including ‘Doxy’ and ‘Limehouse Blues’ are followed by the MJQ’s 20 and then Edwards 14-and-a-bit. A layer cake perhaps, but quite digestible.
