Claiming to collect together in one place all the live recordings from Rollins' 1959 European visit, this catches him five months before his two-year retirement from public performance and only eight months after the Big Brass/Trio set (reviewed in Jazzwise 160). Like that album, and unlike the intervening “all-star” date with The Contemporary Leaders, this begins with his regular line-up of a trio, here Grimes and LaRoca. The latter had been with him in the past year but, for some reason never divulged (I think), fails to appear on the last 70 minutes out of 180, being replaced by Harris (then resident in Sweden) and Clarke (resident in France). Interestingly, much of the first two CDs features fairly short numbers seemingly for radio broadcast, hence the reliable sound, and also includes four different versions of ‘I've Told Every Little Star’, plugging the opening track of the Contemporary LP. But the final CD recorded in Aix-en-Provence has the feel of an after-hours club (not confirmed in the notes but, after 52 minutes, Rollins begs off claiming tiredness) and, with Clarke on drums, these three long numbers sound more like what we became used to when Sonny started visiting London in 1965.
