I once daydreamed of opening a proper jazz café, a cosy late-night joint with no booze but plenty of freshly toasted sandwiches, fresh coffee (which you might top up from your hip flask) and soulful sounds on the hi-fi. It never happened, but if it had, records like this would have been playing every night. The perfect backdrop to any relaxed evening conversation, it features the great Sonny Stitt meandering over some gently cooking Hammond organ from Brother Jack McDuff. Taken from two vinyl albums originally issued on Prestige, it yields 13 tracks of solid standards (‘All of Me’, ‘Time After Time’, ‘Sunday’), ballads and blues. The ideas are funky, the sounds are mellow and the groove is deep. And sometimes that's all a sentient adult needs.
