Composed of two 1960s albums, Rearin’ Back and Homage to Ellington, this enjoyable reissue finds a youngish Stitt in sparkling form and almost exclusively playing alto, always his better horn, with two strong trios. Historians will note that pianist Mathews, though often heard with Dexter Gordon, recorded only once more with Stitt and that Paul Chambers, bassist on the LA session scene, never did so again apart from on a live European tour with Miles Davis in late 1960.
Not enough has been written about Stitt’s superfine technique, his warm yet muscular tone, precise fluency at any tempo or key and not least his exceptional sense of structure. Retakes were rarely necessary. Though seldom playing written arrangements, Sonny always found a pleasing and creative way of rounding off each number. A wonderful blues player, he was also an expert interpreter of even the most complex standards. Check his versions of ‘Solitude’ and ‘Sophisticated Lady’ on the Ellington tribute session.
Much of his life was spent on the road, fronting local rhythm sections. Not always an inspiring experience. Here he is relaxed, imposing and inventive, playing the post-bop music he loved in a way that audiences the world over could enjoy. One of his happier reissues.
