Armenian/Estonian double bassist Ara Yaralyan and Finnish drummer Markku Ounaskari have previously worked together in a trio led by Finnish pianist Kari Ikonen. Here, with Estonian guitarist Jaak Sooäär taking the lead instrumental role, they explore similar territory, concentrating on highly melodic and meticulously presented contemporary post-bop. The first couple of tracks set a mood of gentle quietude: ‘November Rose’ is a pretty, sighing ballad with Ounaskari's brushes shushing while, on ‘Teisele kaldale/To the Other Side,’ Yaralyan bows his bass like a mournfully sonorous cello part. But it's not all so genteel. ‘Rõõmus vang/Cheerful Prisoner' is dark and brooding jazz-rock with Sooäär's clean, clear lines sitting somewhere between Gabor Szabo's mysterious swirl and the ebullient twang of rockabilly. The title track is episodic fusion reminiscent of the more proggish output of 1990s post-rock bands like Tortoise. On ‘Four Months,’ Sooäär even cranks out some petulantly grungy chords before sliding into a more opulent melodic setting. It's thoughtful music, executed with aplomb.
