So prolific are RareNoise's releases you can miss the quality amid the quantity, but there's no doubting the Genoa-based label has landed a major coup with the signing of France's enigmatic and decidedly unprolific Spin Marvel. Only the third release in a decade, the Marvels once felt very much France's band, but with Parricelli's guitar textures gone, Infolding is a more organic, team effort. Not that France's drumming is any less to the fore: indeed it's hard to imagine anyone else being so elastic yet so tight on the dark vortexes of ‘Same Hand Swiss Double Pug’ (song title of the year surely!) But now Evensen's electronics are more interventional rather than laying down washes, while Molvaer, who at times of late has sounded like a pastiche of himself, is once again energised; Lord above, on ‘Tuesday's Blues’ he lays aside all the pedals and effects (well, nearly all of them) and plays straight ahead blues horn. In a world of ephemera, Spin Marvel remain urgent and unremittingly challenging.
