Square One is a Glasgow-based quartet initially coming together as students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in 2014. Winning the 2016 Peter Whittingham Jazz Award (that launched the careers of the likes of Soweto Kinch, Roller Trio and Empirical) proceeds were put towards this debut release In Motion. A unity of purpose and warm dialogue between the musicians is evident throughout the recording. Joe Williamson's patiently lyrical guitar and Peter Johnstone's piano synch up on the lyrical fusion-ish band titled theme, while the airy jazz-folk harmonies on ‘Full Circle’ are more reminiscent of Nick Drake's Bryter Later period. Similarly, while ‘Quicksand’ offers a more muscular jazz-rock drive, as does the guitarist's raucous blues ‘Crawler’, the Brad Mehldau-influenced Johnstone's Ivo Neame-like imaginative soloing on ‘12’ makes your ears prick up. While originality and approach might be uppermost on the minds of a lot of young musicians today, for Square One it's all about developing a unique group chemistry first.
