This timely 25th anniversary remastered reissue of Tom Jenkinson's debut under the moniker Squarepusher, Feed Me Weird Things (it's also here released on vinyl for the first time), is a great chance for those new to his hugely prolific and diverse oeuvre to dive into its fast and furious, extremely jazz-informed roots. These can frequently sound like he's channelling Jaco Pastorius and Herbie Hancock at a warehouse party. Yet, while his fluid fretless bass flies impressively over tracks such as the frantically funky opener ‘Squarepusher Theme, as well as ‘The Swifty, ‘Smedley's Medley’ and ‘Kodak’ – it's the then 21-year-old Jenkinson's sound– barrier busting ‘drill and bass’ beats that really push the envelope, blurring the lines between the played and the programmed to dizzying effect. Jenkinson once described Squarepusher as “a battleground” between styles and sounds and his all-analogue set-up here lends ‘Tundra’ a haunting yet danceable sci-fi ambience; ‘North Circular’ head-slapping electro-shock beats, and ‘UFO's Over Leytonstone’ could soundtrack a stoned, late-night stagger home. While FMWT is overlong (at 77 minutes) and can at times sound like a mix tape, at its strongest it's a game-changing opening gambit.
Commenting on this anniversary issue Jenkinson says, “the remastering was focused on getting a decent overall balance while retaining the bite in the original recordings – overall how it sounds in the new edition is much closer to my original tapes. The memory of the first mastering session is clouded by drinking several bottles of Champagne so perhaps that's why it ended up sounding so weird.” Sounds about right.
