This is the fourth album by Paris-based, Bosnian-born drummer Srdjan Ivanovic's pan-European group Blazin' Quartet, and it is not without merit. The players are proficient, the blend of brass, bass and electric guitar is attractive and the engineering yields a nicely balanced, well defined mix. Yet the material is largely underwhelming and too often settles into a middling comfort zone. Ivanovic leans towards wistful, at times sorrowful moods that have faint echoes of Kenny Wheeler's tone poetry, yet the arrangements often lack light and shade, and in spite of some very competent execution the songs and solos can't hold the interest over the course of an entire album. The presence of French flute virtuoso Magic Malik makes a distinct difference but it is hard to shake the feeling that this is a good group that needs a burst of inspiration to ensure that it doesn't end up stuck in a category marked ‘passable.‘
