These unheard tapes have languished in the Pacific Jazz vaults since 1953, but the last few years have seen dribs and drabs begin to surface. Yours truly recalls reviewing extracts from this cache in the summer of 2014 for Jazzwise. And now what one presumes to be the entire 15-track performance is now on offer. And in truth, my opinion has changed since then. Wayward habits may have temporarily sidelined Gerry Mulligan, but the repertoire remains very much the same. The recording quality is beyond reproach, but the two horns seldom connect and it’s no big secret that the enmity that existed between Getz and Baker over the years frequently caused unnecessary tensions. There are moments when all the parts fall into place, but sadly too few.
