The eligibility of this album for the Poll Winners label shows that its warm welcome in 1962 was perhaps exaggerated by the then- current anti-avant-garde backlash and by the fact of being Getz’s first US-recorded small-group album in three years. (Presumably the marvellous Eddie Sauter- arranged Focus, on which Getz was working at the same time, was too unconventional to gain critical consensus immediately.) The collection of two standards, a Basie head and three Brookmeyer originals offers ample space for the latter and especially for Getz to work their magic, with the rhythm- section including Getz favourite Roy Haynes doing everything they should. Maybe there’s less of a spark than you might wish for, but there’s compensation in the roughly-recorded bonus broadcast from two months later. Hosted by Symphony Sid, with Brookmeyer out and Neves replaced by Jimmy Garrison (a week after he joined in with Coltrane at the Village Vanguard), the four titles include a long ‘Autumn Leaves’ and an almost complete version of Rollins’ ‘Airegin’.
