Impresario Norman Granz could never be accused of ever short-changing concertgoers. By 1960, his twice-yearly JATP road shows had changed their format from being a line-up of a dozen or more solo giants stretched across the stage, to touring a bunch of self-contained units. In this instance, the price of a ticket got you the Oscar Peterson Trio, Miles Davis’ Quintet and Stan Getz fronting a hastily assembled trio which, in this instance, featured Oscar's rhythm pals Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen plus pianist Jan Johansson. Exquisitely recorded, Getz opens his account with ‘Gone With The Wind’ and as usual, approaches everything he performs as though it had been exclusively composed for the unique sound of his horn. The rest of his set comprises ‘Woody ’n’ You’, a lingering ‘Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most’, ‘Land's End’, a heartfelt ‘I Remember Clifford’ and concludes with ‘Pernod’. No complaint there whatsoever – just trebles all round. Now here's the good news, the entire evening's performances from Peterson, Davis and Getz will be issued as a three-CD package next year entitled The Zurich Concert, April 8, 1960.
