Dedicated Blue Note fans may well feel a distinct sense of déjà vu, as this 2CD collection, boasting 18 tracks, is actually a reissue of three albums, Z.T’s Blues, Up At Minton’s Vol.1 and Vol.2, that the Turrentine-Green duo cut for Alfred Lion’s label at the start of the 1960s. The popular soul jazz movement was a crucial fixture on the jazz landscape at the time and these two joint-leaders, backed by first-call sidemen, give an object lesson in the sub-genre here. While the head-solo-head formula, with the mandatory solo workouts over chord changes, is a formula that inevitably runs its course, the exponents are more than capable of holding the interest. Turrentine, with his pinched, peppery turn of phrase, is on top form, and Green, his sharp single-note navigations of harmony as attractively leisurely as ever, is blues incarnate. A strong rhythm section for the sets is anchored by Art Taylor and Al Harewood respectively.
