Stunt’s press release tells me that Rasmussen is "Denmark’s leading interpreter of Brazilian music", stating that his familiarity with the genre is unrivalled and indeed, all 11 of the album’s tracks are by him.
The opening piece ‘Ton To Ton’ is easy-going, the percussion simple, the bass solo unremarkable, the level of improvisation modest. ‘Hymn To Life’ is slow, the piano almost reverential in its approach, its relation to Brazil kept mute. The title track is more animated, and has something of the expected Latin American rhythmic momentum but again is light on Rio-style joie de vivre. ‘Home’ is elegiac in tone and style, quite moving in its simplicity.
Vocalist Marilda Almedia adds her cool-sounding artistry to ‘Manha De Carnaval’, its lilting quality underpinned by percussive rattling while the others sing background. Wessberg and Krag get to play on the final track, and the energy level rises. The jazz content is slow to appear: maybe I’m missing something. More low-energy fare than danceable mayhem, that’s for sure.
