The people at ECM must have realised that Scandinavian angst is all very well for times of affluence, but what the world needs now is more of that latin fun and flair. Acknowledging Italian jazz in the shape of pianist Bollani, they’ve now added the Brazilian virtuoso of the 10-string mandolin, who’s collaborated with people from Béla Fleck to Richard Galliano. What’s more this is a live concert with the musicians reacting to each other and even putting on the audience – for instance Bollani sings along with his piano line at one point and, to conclude ‘Guarda Che Luna’, satirises the original rock-and-roll vocal. Most of the repertoire is Brazilian, including Jobim, Baden Powell and Chico Buarque; but also historic stuff written by Pixinguinha (‘Rosa’, published in 1917) and Ernesto Nazareth (the 1914 ‘Cavaquinho’, which became something of an international hit in the 1950s). It’s all grist to a very lively mill, with the most energetic improv being in minor keys, so maybe that’s where the ECM cliché comes in.
