The first time they were recorded, the titular lyrics to Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's groundbreaking rock opera were sung by Murray Head – and Jesus was voiced by Ian Gillan of Deep Purple. Here, the words are delivered in a whisper-growl by Italian pianist and composer Stefano Bollani, and the chorus is sung by what would appear to be assembled family members. It's a fittingly original and individualistic way to cap a deeply personal and highly inventive (and otherwise wordless) take on the stage musical.
Bollani saw the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar when he was a teenager and was hooked. He now offers his solo piano variations version of the stage work, and it's a treat. The tracks deliver an impressive range of stylistic reinterpretations of the well-known tunes. ‘Heaven on their Minds’ has an agitated funk groove, ‘This Jesus Must Die’ displays a rolling, gospel quality and some dazzling runs while ‘King Herod's Song’ is delivered in best Fats Waller stride style. Great stuff.
