With a stellar band and the whole Zappa universe to choose from, expectations for this project come high. Bollani himself is questing pianist with a post-bop attack and an open-minded attitude that should fit the Zappa bill. Roseman particularly slides and groans with brio, notably on ‘Cosmik Debris’ while Jim Black is cantankerous throughout, especially on the groove of ‘Eat That Question’. Grenadier, too, gets the chance to stretch out on elongated cuts like ‘Blessed Relief’. The closing stomper ‘Uncle Meat’ is equally epic in size, but somehow all those quality moments don't join up to anything like a whole. Zappa isn't meant to be such hard work is he? And maybe it's post-Zappa irony, but Bollani's solo take on ‘Peaches En Regalia’ somehow reduces that splendid theme to a Mrs Mills-type pub medley, and I'm probably doing Mrs Mills a disservice there.
