It is difficult to pin this Belgian trio down, not least because this, their third album, reveals a strong shift towards electronica from previous acoustic piano. The players originally studied in Belgium and Scandinavia and while Steiger is now in its eighth year, each of them continues to be involved in a diversity of other projects including indie rock, psych-synth, pop and jazz outfits. It's a fragmentary musical life that might explain the (intentional) fault lines in their music, with tunes that crash out of shape and context, often repeatedly.

The effect is clearly calculated and unerringly effective: even after a few listens, the music retains that sense of unpredictability generated on first encounter. For some tracks this is explicable: ‘Slivovitsj’ for instance is a montage of musical elements, including even a cocktail moment, that slips into the woozy disorder the title predicts. ‘The Happiest Thought Of My Life, a brief track, has the exaggerated charm of a children's TV song. It is harmless, yet also weird. ‘Sun Dog’ has the production values of a trip hop anthem, washes of synth over strict bassline and tight drumming, only disturbed by a short spell where the bass goes off the rails, ‘Lambda’ also uses cheesy synth sounds to create a breezy pop song that suddenly crashes out, then restores itself, Do you get the picture? It's all well-crafted stuff and none of this feels whimsical, more deliberately puzzling – possibly for the musicians themselves as much as anyone.
