While sax and drum duos have enjoyed occasional prominence over the years, sax and bass remains a rarer combination. Perhaps it's a question of energy: not even John Edwards can quite compete with the rhythmic dynamo that is a trap kit having seven shades of shit kicked out of it. Where those four strings can trump drums, however, is in terms of pitch: harmonic support, of course, but melody too. While Steve Lehman wafts evocatively, fellow New Yorker Stephan Crump – known for his work with pianist Vijay Iyer – runs the gamut from pizzicato counter-melodies to bowed, double-stopped ostinato figures and more abstract explorations of timbre. The mid-section of ‘Terroir’ even sees him tapping rhythms, tabla-style, on the body of the bass. Melancholy and mournful, Kaleidoscope And Collage deserves consideration next to the finest offerings of the limited sax 'n’ bass canon: Red Mitchell and Lee Konitz, say, or Ron Carter and Houston Person.
