This is proggy jazz-rock folk at first, with the drummer leader Galland sunny and earthy on the Benavent-penned opener ‘En Ruta’. Magic Malik has some excellent vocal touches and the kind of flute playing you almost never hear on jazz records now, especially on the standout ‘Ali Pasha’. Lobi is also a welcome reminder of the talent of Benavent who you may know from his work with Chick Corea. With Arabic, Turkish and Armenian traditional tunes leavened in as well as democratic apportioning of the compositional tasks, it's a highly likeable and attractive album that uses the flexibility of jazz improvising as just one ingredient among the ancient sounds. Tigran is a bit subdued but it's good to hear him in such fine company as here.
