The big change is Hays coming in for the sublime Larry Goldings. But panic not, the change is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and there's a Goldings song on board, the Steely Dan-ish ‘Skulk’, to remind us of the keys man's contribution to the band's last three releases. Gadd as ever revels in his role of leader, producer and writer, and largely keeps his prodigious drum talents reined in to give voice to his long-time pals. Compared to previous releases, and especially the live DVD, the overall vibe is more intimate, with less obvious rockist revels. The emphasis is on tight grooves, as on the light but never throwaway ‘Where's Earth?’, or the deliriously slow blues of ‘Auckland by Numbers’, a Landau song oozing seductively with Fowler's horn. Fowler likewise glows on Johnson's ballad ‘Norma's Girl’, with new guy Hays nailing a slow-reveal piano solo. It's a particular joy that Gadd finds space for an Allan Holdsworth song. ‘Temporary Fault’, from I.O.U․. It shines with Holdsworth's vision, and though you may think it a natural vehicle for Landau, this is very much an ensemble piece building to an elegiac climax.
