Thankfully this gaggle of virtuosi are rather more than James Taylor’s backing band, although that’s doubtless how this release will be sold. Indeed, it’s rather more than the Gadd band, as Goldings and Landau wrote significant amounts of material, while the project’s feel is very much of a collective jam, with the soloists bouncing off each other across a series of flavoursome grooves. If any individual does steal the show, it’s Goldings with his organ work, dark and soulful on the Miles-ish ‘Africa’, or with a New Orleans bounce on ‘Who Knows Blues’, both Landau tunes. But each member has space to stretch: Landau is blue and swinging against Gadd’s brushes on the splendidly sentimental Jarrett ballad ‘Country’, now turned into a waltz, while the inevitable Radiohead cover, ‘Scatterbrain’ (who predicted the Oxford boys would be writing jazz standards for the 21st century?) completes the album with an eerie collective work out. A rare chance to hear fine musicians under no pressure stretching out for their own undiluted pleasure.
