Steve Kuhn was once a pupil of Madame Margaret Chaloff, a legend in Boston in the 1950s, 60s and early 70s for being a remarkable pianist and teacher. She taught a method of piano technique that had been passed down through generations of pianists that stretch back to Mozart, Czerny and Beethoven that involved using the breath, with weightless arms, the object of which was to create a singing tone. Madame Chaloff, in addition to being the mother of jazz legend Serge Chaloff, had many illustrious students, including Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, George Shearing and Kenny Werner. Kuhn’s playing has long embodied Madame Chaloff’s techniques in terms of touch and tone, and albums such as Trance, Last Year’s Waltz and Mostly Ballads are exemplary examples of jazz piano improvisation allied to a remarkably even fingering technique and clarity of tone. At This Time… joins these fine albums, comprising seven lesser known standards and two Kuhn originals. Produced by Artie Moorhead who seems to bring the very best out of Kuhn, this is an album of exemplary, high quality jazz. Perhaps unfairly remembered as the pianist who preceded McCoy Tyner in the classic Coltrane quartet, Kuhn has his own distinct voice and, as this album eloquently demonstrates, he is a fine jazz pianist who really is deserving of wider recognition.
