Recent reissues of the soprano legend in quartets in the early 1960s (Rudd, Grimes, Harris), show how well suited he was to the format, and this session recorded in Paris some two decades later has the same verve despite the markedly different personnel. Three Monk tunes, of which there's a cracking take on ‘Epistrophy’, set the tone nicely but the originals are no less vibrant, bringing a pronounced sense of dance to proceedings on many occasions, the highpoint of which is ‘Prospectus’. It swings and sways mightily between the West Indies, New Orleans and New York as Lacy and Steve Potts cook up quite a storm by way of their entwined solos and unison lines. Elsewhere the performance of what might be described as Lacy standards like the much-loved ‘Wickets’ is electrifying. There is a seemingly infinite stream of Lacy music being released, which bears testimony to a prolific output during his lifetime. What is remarkable is that quantity is matched by quality.
