When pianist Mulgrew Miller died of a stroke in 2013, aged 53, he left a legacy of 15 albums as a leader, 400 as a sideman and a book of classic compositions. Along with the late Kenny Kirkland, he forged a definitive approach to acoustic modern-mainstream jazz piano by merging the modality of McCoy Tyner with the light touch impressionism of Herbie Hancock. Here, close friend and one-time colleague vibraphonist Steve Nelson pays tribute by revisiting the Miller repertoire with a set of seven covers and two standards. In addition, there are two dedications to Miller written by the leader and pianist Danny. Nelson's quartet gives the late pianist's compositions a fresh and breezy run through without changing the basics. The riff-and-swing composition ‘Soul Leo’ fully deserves its jazz standard status, ‘Eastern Joy Dance’ is a 6/8 rocker while ‘New Wheels’ features dense harmonies and a chase between piano and vibes. Nelson's clean-cut soulful playing sails over the fast tempos, adds edge to the riffs and glistens as it curls round the ballad melody of ‘It Never Entered My Mind’. Danny Grissett is equally assured on piano as both lead voice and complimentary support. Both Miller and Nelson built on the legacy of classic Blue Note, and this album shows how the music of Horace Silver, the Blakey bands et al was developed in the renaissance years. And with bass and drums sticking closely to a hard-bop script, the album makes an excellent companion piece to the Louis Hayes' celebration of Horace Silver reviewed above.
