Stalwart UK improv drummer, Noble, and O'Malley, guitarist with US avantdoom unit Sunn 0))), have collaborated before, together with Daniel Sullivan and Kristofer Rygg of Norwegian black metal outfit Ulver, in the quartet Æthenor, which released an album, En Form for Blå, in 2010. Shrunk to a duo, O'Malley and Noble make more noise, not less. These improvisations focus less on atmosphere and more on activity – thanks in the main to Noble's hyperactive fidgeting with gongs, woodblocks, chimes and cymbals. It's as if the two instruments have swapped roles, with Noble soloing up-front while O'Malley provides background textures with distant roars and rumbles. There's a distant quality to O'Malley's playing, with lumbering blasts and lunges taking the place of riffs and no real soloing – or even melodies – to speak of. Between them Noble and O'Malley suggest a unique improvised music that borrows from metal and jazz without sounding anything like either.
