Since his emergence in jazz as a member of the Gary Burton Quartet in the 1960s, Swallow has always been one of the most melodic players on his instrument, which, allied to his impeccable sense of time, has seen him feature in a wide range of musical projects over the years. This date, from 2011 and recorded after a short European tour, is certainly a highpoint in his latter-day discography. It seeks to go beyond the preconceived notions implied by an organ-guitar-bass combination, seeking to explore both textural and lyrical possibilities. That is not to say they have eschewed a certain robustness because for Swallow, the groove is an important component of his music. Bley is understated but never cautious, Cardenas’ plays a key role in unifying this ensemble while Cheek plays with an affability and engaging energy that is just right for the moment. An example of good humour translating into good music.
