Tony Levin and Pat Mastellotto's deep understanding of each other over the decades with King Crimson and their own projects always make Stickmen outings intriguing, veering as they do between the most splendid of hokum to genuinely scary soundscapes. Even ‘new boy’ Reuter has shared sonic adventures with them for a decade. So, it's the arrival of Gary Husband for this one-off, pre-lockdown gig that brings the spark of something new to the line-up. Husband's piano work is sublime and seriously under recorded, but here it's his battery of electronic keys, as with his work with Billy Cobham, that is to the fore. He brings a vivid sense of colour that elevates the crunching intensity of the other members, be it rhythmically as on ‘Cusp’, or lifting the classic Crims run out ‘Larks’ Tongues in Aspic Part II' with sounds of surprise even amid that relentless riff.
