A slew of releases from the one time Crusaders drum man and producer. A Jazz Moment In Time will intrigue Jazzwise readers in that it features one of Hubbard’s final concerts. Exclusively on flugelhorn, Hubbard fits in admirably with a proficient band that has no problems easing its way through untesting arrangements of ‘Caravan’ and ‘How Deep Is The Ocean’. Retrospectively, there’s a poignancy about Hubbard’s performance of ‘Little Sunflower’ but despite the best efforts of the steadfast Rushen, the performances rarely lift out of cruise control. Live In LA is even blander dinner jazz, but again the presence of a stellar guest, Hubert Laws, makes it worth cocking an ear to. As the title suggests, We Went West features musicians who have travelled from the south and east, in Maslov’s case all the way from Russia, to enjoy the benefits of the West Coast scene. Accomplished, adroit, but so smooth you may find it slipping all too easily out of your CD player.
