Bluey Maunick and Gilles Peterson's relationship goes back at least a decade, when they worked together guiding Incognito's chart-topping career: this latest project reunites them to dig deeper into Brit-Funk history and pay tribute to the early 1980s pioneers that gave the genre its name, As a founder member of both Light Of The World and its spin-off act Freeez, Maunick's own credentials could scarcely be bettered, and he's enlisted such fellow UK jazz-funk luminaries as Peter Hinds and Randy Hope-Taylor to adorn this collection of unapologetically uptempo dancefloor-targeted bangers, There's an abundance of super-tight bass and drum grooves, airy vocal choruses and tasteful synth-string pads, with plenty of percussion and light-touch guitar chank propelling things along, The title track has some retro-sounding drum programming from Richard Bull, there's some tasty horn charts adding depth to ‘Give In To What Is Real’ and ‘Kinshasa FC’, but it's the bass and drum team of Francis Hylton and Matt Cooper who are the real stars of the show, relentlessly laying out a flawless stream of precision high-intensity funk throughout, The slightly lo-fi pop sensibility that characterised the first wave of Brit-Funk has been replaced by a very contemporary sounding digitally enabled professionalism that may not match the originals’ charm for some listeners, but the energy and drive can't be faulted, and this album is sure to delight the jazz-funk faithful.
