Here's a gentle gift from two of our more accomplished string fellows. McCallum, one time of Cinematic Orchestra, largely lends a lyric, acoustic voice, while Walker, takes the more muscular electric side, often with a blues inflection. Their individual but entwining voices are complemented by a string quartet and all the elements quietly coalesce in a satisfying but, truth be told, not the most challenging of sets. That said, Walker inevitably rocks out on the opening ‘And Finally’, and there's a generous variation in material that doesn't let the mellow slip into the complacent. So the Metheney-esque ‘Yewfield’, all harmonics and folk-filled runs contrasts with a lush, romantic ‘Alfie’ (that's your candlelit dinner jazz sorted), while McCullum adopts a Debussy string quartet for solo guitar. Guitaro-philes will drool and analyse, others may wonder where the jazz is, but either way the pleasures of witnessing such guitar conversations are evident and abundant, not least on the mysteries of the title track.
