Belgium is a vibrant crossroads country, the double-nature of its improbable yet somehow ongoing Flemish-Walloon equilibrium seeming to encourage jazz experiment. The nation's size also requires bands to look outside it, perhaps explaining STUFF's UK label debut here on Manchester's spiritual jazz home, Gondwana. They are part of a Belgian sub-genre of 1980s-influenced electro-fusion (Andrew Claes also wields an EWI for BRZZVLL), and are frankly hard going, especially if you suffered through the period's uglier sounds at the time. ‘Colibri’ is a typically jagged, micro-arranged jigsaw, in which Dreis Laheye's bass runs are met by squelching synths and stuttering electro-scat. There's some relief in the cushioned, pretty groove of ‘Fulina’, glistening, stereo-filling synth swells of ‘Delta’, and Aztec ambience of the most traditionally jazz track, ‘Spinning Leaf’ (you can practically see temples rising from jungle mist as electronics swirl over spare bass and percussion). STUFF never settle, shifting their sonic ground with nomadic conviction. The purpose of their jarring passing through a sometimes hostile landscape can, though, be unclear.
