This is the third album in recent times involving Sunna Gunnlaugs to be reviewed in these pages. She is one of the major exhibits in Icelandic jazz, a neat, competent, self-contained player; she contributes four originals to this session, the rest provided by her husband, drummer Scott McLemore, and bassist Þorgrímur Jónsson. Gunnlaugs still sounds a musician in search of a definitive identity; her playing one of certain characteristics than a personal, individual and recognisable style. Nevertheless, she is a player of good taste, with a firm touch and developing melodic sense and there are moments on ‘Distilled’ or ‘Smiling Face’ that suggest she is gradually becoming the player she always wanted to be.
