Though a virtual unknown outside Norway in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Svein Finnerud was one of the country's strongest avantgarde voices who pointed to the path later followed in the 1970s by Jan Garbarek, Arild Andersen and Terje Rypdal. In what is a fascinating reissue, this, the trio's second album, reveals a wide range of stylistic influences, from funky grooves, Paul Bley flourishes through to out-and-out free improv beyond the constraints of time and tonality. What might seem like wild eclecticism is held together by the trio's collective voice (Finnerud was only 25 years of age when this album was made). The pianist's day job was that of a painter and graphic artist and later presentations included multi-media works featuring jazz and the visual arts, so it's unsurprising that Plastic Sun is conceptually ambitious; it says a lot that the trio had the technique and imagination to pull it all of in a way that stands the test of time.
