44:42 begins like a scene from a Noh play. Sharp bursts of flute, frantic yet spaced out, spar with off-kilter drums. The tension builds, a cluster of synth chords cascade into rhythm, and minutes later we’re in a Western. The transition is electrifying, an outcome of absolute spontaneity and masterful musicianship in front of a live audience.
The band is comprised of Tamar Osborn on wind instruments, Yohannes Kebede on keyboards, and Will Glaser on drums; all three are London-based, but this is their first time performing together.
It’s perhaps owing to the fact that these musicians are all from slightly different, yet overlapping, music scenes, that two sides of semi-free improvisation can sound so consistently fresh. Afrobeat patterns break down into cosmic cinematic psych, before heading through electronica realms into free jazz dissonance.
The record is the first to come from Moment’s Notice, an event series curated by George Nelson and held at Amp Studios in London. It is thanks to Nelson and his new label Red Dust that the magic of this one-off collaboration has been captured, preserved, and made available in high-quality audio for many more to enjoy.
