The music of the piano trio led by Greek composer, improviser and bandleader Tania Giannouli has been likened to ECM's Manfred Eicher on a Mediterranean holiday, and no wonder. There's a reflective, cerebral feel to their pared-down acoustic musings, in which Giannouli's subtle but driving pianism blends with the trumpet of Andreas Polyzogopolous and the sharp ornamental flourishes of Kyriakos Tapakis's oud-lute.
Giannouli has previously released three acclaimed albums including the genre-defying Forest Stories with Portuguese reed player Paulo Chagas, and a 2015 ensemble project, Transcendence.
Her background in cross-art form work – visual art installations, plays – goes some way to explaining the spaciousness of her compositions, with their deft, often melancholic mix of classical music, folk tradition and European chamber jazz.
