Given that they’ve played on each other’s albums for the past 15 years, it’s surprising that this is the very first collaborative project between Ted and Gladys, aka vocalist Trudy Kerr and bassist Geoff Gascoyne. The title track is an absolute gem from the 1960s Broadway musical Sweet Charity featuring music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. One of the many songs from the Johnny Burke/Harold Spina songbook, ‘The Beat of My Heart’ is arranged as a stripped down voice/bass duet, with Gascoyne getting to flex his vocal cords. There are a number of terrific co-written songs, including the über smooth ‘Save Me’ (great soloing here from Ashley Slater) and the dreamy, Fender Rhodes driven ‘Poppies’. Other highlights include the 1960s hit from US songsmith Bob Lind, ‘Elusive Butterfly’, with beautifully understated accompaniment from guitarist Chris Allard, plus Blossom Dearie’s touching John Lennon homage, ‘Dear John’.
